Best 8 Reasons why Prime Lenses for DSLR are better than Zoom Lenses

1. Prime lenses are best for beginners

Since you are just a beginner in the field of photography, I would suggest that instead of zoom lenses you should use prime lenses. Since you are just learning to focus over the subject, with the help of prime lenses for DSLR,  selective focusing would be possible. In fact, with practice you will see that the result that you are getting with the prime lenses is just so great!

2. Prime lenses have wider aperture

Since prime lenses have wider aperture focusing on one particular subject would become quite easy and this would surely make you a better photographer. Using prime lenses is less complex as compared to zoom ones. In the starting of my career I was quite obsessed with zoom lenses and hence I had put in lots of efforts to master the same. But all my efforts were in vain and then I went back to prime lenses and to my surprise the results were just awesome.

3. Prime lenses give sharper image than zoom

Prime lenses for DSLR are simple and inside there are no extra lenses. Thus, the image quality is sharper and better when compared with the photography done with zoom lenses. Due to less diffraction, the photo quality would be amazing in case of prime lenses. Just keep in mind, this advice is for beginners. The pro guys already know the loop holes and the tricks to master every single thing in the photography field. Soon, I will come to that as well. But since, this is Photography information for beginners I have to advice the newbies to first master prime lenses only.

4. Get bokeh with prime lenses

In terms of photography, bokeh is slang. Well, it actually means specular lights. With prime lenses bokeh is possible and hence it creates a perfect and interesting background. I like images that would look imperfect but would have an appeal in terms of the specular lights and the colors it displays. It’s true that zoom lenses would come up with smooth finishing, but creatively, I don’t advocate zoom lenses when I need those well-defined images.

5. Prime lenses are low light masters

When I say that prime lenses have wider aperture then it clearly means that it accumulates more light and hence, the quality of the image will also be good enough in low light conditions. In other words, I would term prime lenses and low light Ninja. A perfect comrade even when you have a dull day!

6. Prime lenses, best for creativity

If you had been a wedding photographer then I would have advised you to use zoom lenses because you just can’t alter the lenses every now and then to catch the best image. You are actually struggling to achieve a lot of things while you are on your wedding photography assignment and hence zoom lenses would be the best choice, keeping in mind the demand of the moment. But if you are a creative artist, then you would need perfection in every image of yours and hence, you would love to settle down with prime lenses.

7. Prime lenses would not encourage distortion

One of the reasons I advocate prime lenses for DSLR also because they have fixed focal length and hence, the amount of distortion is meager.  Hence, the photos would be clear and not blur.

8. Primes are light in weight and portable

Prime lenses are smaller in size as compared to the zoom lenses. Thus they are light in weight and while you want to carry them, you can just easily do that. They can be packed and ported easily. I being a person who doesn’t like to carry too much baggage, my love for prime lenses, would always be more as compared to zoom lenses.

But this doesn’t mean that you completely negate zoom lenses! I would repeat again, since this is Photography information for beginners, for them, using prime lenses would be a good treat. But, never under estimate the zoom lenses because they would provide a pro photographer with a lot of conveniences. When you are on a shooting assignment you just can’t waste your time changing the lens and things of that sort. So, for the professional photographer zoom lenses would be highly convenient option.

If you are looking forward for a portrait then zoom lenses would give a better background and with the kind of blur effect it would give, the portrait can be easily differentiated which would add sharpness to the image.

If you are a wild life photographer or a sports photographer then perhaps zoom lenses would be a great comrade for you.
